Introduction

What is accessibility and how does it relate to the Internet? For the purpose of the Virtual Guidedog Web site this policy shall refer to accessibility in its broadest sense as allowing all users to participate in online interactive experiences using any technology from any location. World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)'s Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) which is an effort to improve Web accessibility, state the following definition of Web accessibility:

Web accessibility means that people with disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the Web, and that they can contribute to the Web. Web accessibility also benefits others, including older people with changing abilities due to aging (Web Accessibility Initiative website, 2009).

W3C’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.0 (WCAG 2.0) and the US Section 508 Standards for Web accessibility provide globally recognised guidelines that help Web designers create Web sites which are accessible to people that may have visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, language, learning and neurological disabilities. Therefore, any development of this Web site will endeavour to adhere to the W3C WCAG 2.0 Level AAA Success Criterion, following such guidelines will allow this Website to continue to uphold the accessibility objectives of the Virtual Helping Hands organisation.
