Checklist of What You'll Need on Your Adventure

A. Possibly, you will need EVA.

If you cannot read text, you will need EVA.

We are fortunate to have a great program that voices the chat window called EVA (Essential Voicechat Advancement) that Jarek Dejavu designed specifically to read the SL chat for Windows systems. He has agreed to provide the program for free to people with visual impairments and their helpers. Anything in the SL chat window can be "read" aloud for you.

NOTE: You can pick a voice to go with a certain person or task, so you can use different voices to help you identify specific persons, objects, and even Instant Messages (IMs). The different voices can help you tell who or what is there.

If you do not have Windows, you can download a beta version of Max Voice here.

B. Possibly, you will need Max Log In.

If your screenreader does not voice the Log In fields at SecondLife.com, you can use Max Log In to voice the name and password you chose for your new avatar.

You can download the Max Log In program here.

C. Decide if you will have a VHH Virtual Guidedog Dog, Cane, or Ring.

Once you have downloaded the program, you have a choice of what you want your assistive device to look like in the world of Second Life™ (SL).

You have a choice of a dog, cane, or ring. They all do exactly the same things. However, SL is all about doing what you want your way. The motto is "your world, your imagination!" You can be or make whatever you can imagine.

Some people want to use a dog; others prefer a white cane. There is also a mobility ring for people who do not want to be identified to other avatars as disabled but still wish to benefit from this assistive technology.
